Warbler Weekend Update No. 1
The woods are busy in Greensboro. On Friday afternoon, our first walk through the forest to the shores of Caspian Lake included great looks at, among many others, Common Merganser, Common Loon, Magnolia Warbler (that’s one to the right), Chestnut-sided Warbler, Canada Warbler and Northern Parula. Hermit Thrushes were singing through the afternoon. Canadian Tiger Swallowtails are feeding in the lilacs around the lodge. And after an amazing supper at Highland Lodge, we spent quality time with a couple of Barred Owls and some of the season’s first fireflies. (They were probably a Photinus species offering a slow, drawn single yellow flash high in the spruce and fir. ) Our goal this weekend is not necessarily a big bird list, but rather long, satisfying looks at warblers here on their breeding grounds.
